Two New Schools Approved - December 2, 2008
On November 28th, 2008 the Honourable George Abbott, Minister of Health, on behalf of Shirley Bond, the Minister of Education, provided a signed Project Agreement to Chairperson, Alan Chell, for the construction of two new schools for Revelstoke. The total project will be $48 million and will culminate with the opening of a brand new Revelstoke Secondary School and a new elementary school to serve the central student population. At the event, Alan Chell made the following comments.
"I have been a school trustee for 24 years in Revelstoke and I want to start by saying this is the most exciting day we've ever experienced in the School District. This is great news in so many ways.
The children of Revelstoke will benefit by having two new state of the art, green schools for their education. Our secondary school will be the most modern school in the province built to the latest educational standards. Consolidating to one elementary school downtown instead of two means that our budget dollars will be spent on students not buildings. Furthermore, Revelstoke will benefit from improvements to the new school sites such as two new playing fields and a playground.
Thanks to the partnership with the City of Revelstoke, planning will ensure the surrounding area will be utilized and improved as part of the green initiative to make the best use of taxpayer dollars and our land. We will also have the opportunity to work together to ensure that Mountain View Elementary School, Mount Begbie Elementary School and Big Eddy are used as assets for the greater good of the community.
We've got a lot of work ahead of us and it will be an exciting time as this announcement today provides us with so many opportunities. Minister Abbott, on behalf of the Board of Education, our students and our community, please accept our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the investment you are making in the future of Revelstoke."
The Revelstoke Secondary School project has come about as a result of an analysis of the feasibility to renovate the existing structure built in the mid 1950's or replace it with a new modern facility. The elementary school structure comes as a result of the Boardís business case submitted to the Ministry to operate fewer facilities in Revelstoke in a significantly declining student environment. This new school will consolidate all of the elementary population in the downtown and central core into one new modern facility. This completes the Board's two school closure plan which was laid out in 2001.
