Summer Message from SD19 Superintendent

Jul 10, 2025

Dear School Community,

As Superintendent of Schools, I want to take a moment to share my sincere gratitude for your partnership, dedication, and support throughout the 2024/25 school year. Your engagement—whether through classroom volunteering, thoughtful feedback, or daily encouragement at home—continues to make our schools vibrant and inspiring places for all learners.

This year marked the introduction of our Restriction of Digital Devices Policy, which came into effect after March Break. Now, with three months of experience under our belts, we’ve seen how this change has shaped our classrooms. Deep down, many students—even if they won’t always admit it—appreciate the increased focus and connection that come without constant devices. Of course, some of our older students would still like just a little flexibility 😊 Thank you to everyone—students, families, and staff—for approaching this shift with openness and a shared commitment to learning.

To our incredible students, from our littlest learners to our graduates, your curiosity, creativity, and resilience have been nothing short of inspiring. Each day, you remind us why education matters. This summer, I hope you make time to connect, play, and explore the wonders around us.  We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful community, surrounded by forests, the Columbia River, and national parks. Remember: Parks Canada offers free admission for kids/youth, be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to discover these special places with your friends and family.

As you enjoy these experiences, I invite you to reflect on a First Peoples Principle of Learning:

Learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential, and relational (focused on connectedness, on reciprocal relationships, and a sense of place).

This summer, whether you are walking in the forest, spending time with family, or learning something new, I encourage you to think about how you are connected—to the land, to each other, and to yourself.

To our families and caregivers, thank you for entrusting us with your children and for everything you do behind the scenes—reading bedtime stories, coaching teams, helping with homework, and cheering on every success. Your partnership is the foundation of our students’ growth.

To our dedicated staff, your hard work and care for each child have made this year a time of progress, endless possibility, and meaningful growth that will ripple far into the future. I hope you make space to rest and recharge. Take time to step away from your busy routines, enjoy the long summer days, and do the things that bring you peace and joy. You truly deserve this time to restore your energy and well-being.

And to our community partners and early learning collaborators, your continued support helps create a strong start and a bright future for all students. Thank you for being steadfast champions of education from the littles to the bigs!

As we head into summer, may your days be filled with adventure, laughter, and time with the people who matter most. Stay safe, stay curious, and stay connected to all the things that inspire you.

Warmest wishes for a wonderful summer,

Roberta
