October 29th, 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Now that we have had the Goal Setting Conferences on the early dismissal days and the opportunity to connect on your child’s progress, I would like to revisit the new Reporting Order for Communicating Student Learning that came into effect in the 2023-2024 school year.

New Reporting Order
The updated framework introduced the Provincial Proficiency Scale for students from Kindergarten through Grade 9 and allows Grades 10 to 12 to use both the proficiency scale and traditional letter grades. This change enhances flexibility while providing clarity across grade levels.

Moving to Provincial Proficiency Scale for Kindergarten to Grade 9
Students from Kindergarten to Grade 9 are assessed using the British Columbia Provincial Proficiency Scale, which offers a more comprehensive view of student progress by focusing on the skills and knowledge students develop throughout their learning process.

The Four Proficiency Levels:

  • Emerging
  • Developing
  • Proficient
  • Extending

Benefits of the Proficiency Scale:

  1. Clear Learning Goals
This scale helps students and families understand the skills and knowledge expected at each grade level, offering clear goals that students can target.
  2. Growth-Focused
Learning is seen as a journey. This approach values progress, highlights strengths, and identifies areas for growth, helping each student reach their best.
  3. Support for Individualized Learning
Feedback is tailored to individual learning journeys rather than standardized expectations, allowing teachers to guide students along their unique paths.

The Reporting Order for Communicating Student Learning
The Ministry of Education’s Reporting Order offers consistent and clear reporting for all grades, emphasizing:

  • Ongoing Communication
Families will receive regular updates about student progress through report cards, conferences, and digital communications.
  • Descriptive Feedback
Teachers provide specific insights into accomplishments and guidance for next steps, making learning an evolving process.
  • Student Self-Reflection
Students are encouraged to reflect on their progress, developing critical thinking and a growth mindset that will benefit them academically and personally.

A Student-Centered Approach

The Provincial Proficiency Scale and new Reporting Order represent a shift toward individualized learning that supports lifelong growth. We are confident these changes will positively impact your child’s educational journey.

Thank you for your partnership in fostering a vibrant learning environment for all students!
