Superintendents Message – May 2026
Dear Friends & Families,
As spring settles into our community, it brings with it a renewed sense of energy, growth, and connection across our schools. This time of year, offers a welcome opportunity to pause and reflect on the learning, relationships, and collective efforts that make our schools such caring and vibrant places for children and youth.
Across the district, students are engaged in meaningful learning experiences, supported by dedicated staff and enriched by strong partnerships with families and the broader community. Whether in classrooms, on playgrounds, through arts and athletics, or during shared school events, the spirit of curiosity, belonging, and resilience is evident each day.
Across all schools, learning is intentionally grounded in the BC Core Competencies—Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social Awareness.
Arrow Heights Elementary continues to be a vibrant learning environment where curiosity and confidence are nurtured through hands on experiences. Students build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy while practicing the Core Competencies through play based learning, collaboration, and reflection. A strong sense of belonging supports young learners as they develop a positive identity as students and as members of a caring community.
At Begbie View Elementary, learning is deeply relationship based and focused on the whole child. Students are encouraged to communicate their thinking, take risks in their learning, and reflect on their growth. Educators intentionally design learning experiences that develop literacy and numeracy skills while also strengthening students’ personal and social development—helping learners understand themselves and their place within the classroom community.
Columbia Park Elementary continues to shine as a connected and inclusive learning community. Daily classroom practice highlights the Core Competencies as students work together, apply their thinking in meaningful ways, and build resilience through challenge and success. The emphasis on social emotional learning alongside academic growth supports students in becoming thoughtful, engaged learners.
At Revelstoke Secondary School, students are applying the Core Competencies across courses, programs, and extracurricular opportunities. Through academics, trades training, athletics, the arts, leadership, and career connected learning, students are strengthening communication skills, critical and creative thinking, and a sense of responsibility to themselves and others—essential skills as they prepare for life beyond graduation.
A few highlights with educator learning
Primary teachers continued their professional learning through Literacy and Numeracy Learning Circles. This brought educators together to model lessons, observe one another, reflect, and refine practice collaboratively, strengthening instructional approaches while keeping students at the centre of the work.
Literacy and Numeracy Learning Circles:
- Embed First Peoples Principles of Learning, including Knowing in Being and Pedagogy of Voice, into classroom practice through shared learning spaces such as circles, tables, and labs.
- Address the heart and mind of the child, focusing on the whole learner and fostering a strong community of learners.
- Offer multiple entry points for students, supporting confidence, engagement, and diverse ways of learning for young literacy and numeracy learners.
Changing Possibilities for Young Children – a Collaborative inquiry project that brings together community based early childhood educators, strong start facilitators, and Cato three teachers to improve the social and emotional well-being of young children. This inquiry practice to share learning, bill’s a community of practice to extend opportunities for collaborative and implementation of quality practice associated with the increasing social and emotional well-being in young children and to establish a culture of inquiry through documentation, critical reflection and pedagogical narrative.
The Educational Assistant Learning Series continues to provide valuable professional learning that supports EAs in their vital role within our schools. Educational Assistants do amazing work each day supporting students. Their presence helps students feel connected to their learning community, builds student’s confidence and independence. Perhaps most importantly, Educational Assistants play a key role in helping students feel safe, supported, and known, creating learning environments where students are able to engage, take risks, and grow.
Joy, Curiosity and Heart
Across all schools, I am continually inspired by the commitment to student well being, Indigenous education, and relationship centered learning. Learning with and from Indigenous partners, strengthening connections to community, and supporting the whole child remain central to our work. These priorities reflect the values of Revelstoke and the collective commitment we share to nurturing kind, capable, and confident young people.
I find myself reflecting not just on initiatives or milestones, but on the people—students who bring joy and curiosity, staff who lead with heart and professionalism, families and community who partner so thoughtfully in education. Thank you for your continued trust, collaboration, and care.
With gratitude,
Roberta Kubik
